CryptoLocker invasion in the UK: 10 million computers targeted
Recently we reported on CryptoLocker and the threat it poses to internet users. Cryptolocker is a dangerous piece of Ransomware that encrypts personal files on a computer before demanding a ransom for their release. In the vast majority of cases, even if the ransom is paid the files will not be returned, adding the insult of a hefty financial loss to the injury of having your data stolen. With so few computers adequately protected against this threat, its potential for destruction is enormous.
For roughly 10 million UK internet users, this is a threat that just came a lot closer to home. On the 15th November, the National Cyber Crime Unit, a division of the UK Crime agency, issued an urgent warning to alert citizens to the threats caused by a mass spamming event thought to be containing the Cryptolocker malware.
